What is Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease?
Normally there is a muscle called lower esophageal sphincter between our food pipe (esophagus) and stomach. This muscle acts as a one way valve and allows the food to go down to the stomach and prevents the contents of the stomach from going up. In some people this mechanism is loose and the acidic contents of the stomach come up and irritate the food pipe leading to gastro esophageal reflux disease or GERD
